Vivid Girls on the Dance Circuit

Tera Patrickvividgirls2.jpg
Which came first, the dancing or the film work and how did one lead to the other?
It’s kind of a funny thing. I would have to say 95% of all the girls in the business have house danced or stripped before they got into movies.

I always thought stripping was glamorous and the pin-up/sexy, but during the years I would have stripped I was getting a college degree and nursing. I started with Playboy and Penthouse and immediately immersed myself in adult film work.

Getting paid to have sex was so good, that stripping was the last thing on my mind. It wasn’t until I was on top of my game and my fans relentlessly begged me to begin feature dancing that I began to take the stage and take it off.

How do the customers vary from city to city?
My fans are my fans period. Whether I’m in LA, New York, London, Australia or Kentucky, the customs and accents may be different, but at the end of the day they show their appreciation to me for taking time out of my schedule to make an appearance in their area with gifts and kind words. The huge piles of cash on the stage don’t hurt either. Thanks guys, I love you too!

How do the dancers vary from city to city?
Some clubs have girls that really get up there and work the pole. In other clubs the girls just go on stage to show themselves to get more lap or couch dances. Ultimately, this is an honest way for girls to earn a living and the major differences would probably have more to do with the individual dance styles of the girls.

I will say that in secondary markets, particularly down south, the girls seem to be a little less preoccupied with some of the anorexia you see on the coasts.

What’s your Advice to girls about to start stripping?
Get in shape. God made us all different and we all have imperfections, but nothing is sexier than confidence.

How About some Tips for girls already dancing?
Try to have fun at work. No one wants to tip angry or disgruntled strippers. Being backstage in a strip club you see and hear it all. If you have drama at home, leave it at home. Don’t forget that you are there to make money.

What clubs do you dance at?
Some of the clubs that I like to call home are all the Spearmint Rhino’s. I also like Gallaghers in New York, Crazy Horse in San Francisco, Foxy Lady in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Fantasies in Baltimore, Club Elite in Pittsburgh, Oasis in Philly, Al’s Diamond Cabaret in Redding, Pleasure Dome in the Poconos, Admiral Theater in Chicago, Columbus Gold in Ohio, Heartbreakers in Compton, IL, Solid Platinum in Lexington, KY, Anthony’s Showplace in Nashville, and so many other wonderful places throughout the world!

As a feature how do you relate to the regular shift dancers?
I just love the girls in all the clubs. Most of the girls are so nice. Maybe its because the clubs are extra packed when I’m working, maybe its because I never charge house dancers for polaroids, or maybe some of them want to get it on with me. Hey, sometimes I want to get it on with them too!

How do you get guys to maximize YOUR tips?
I’m not really a hustler at all. I just do the sexiest show that I can on stage and I try my best to treat all my fans extra special.

How big a part do drugs play in the business?
I don’t advocate hard drugs, and personally I don’t drink either. However, at 4:20 you might know where to find me.

What’s The Best WaY to describe life on the road?
Life on the road can be very exciting if you treat each day like an adventure. I think the key to best enjoying the road is to keep healthy, exercise and stay in nice hotels.

I always take my little dog Chopper and sneak him in to all the best hotels. When I have extra time on the road I work on my website, www.clubtera.com. There you can see all my upcoming dance appearances.

Savanna Sampson
Which came first, the dancing or the film work and how did one lead to the other?
I started dancing at Scores in Manhattan three years before I ever made an adult film. My sister worked there and told me how awesome it was and stressed how great it would be for me, not just monetarily, but she also felt this was something that would be right up my alley.

As a feature do you relate to the regular shift dancers?
I admire the house dancers and try to learn as much from them as possible. I often think that if I were a house girl I’d definately want to go on stage right after me (the feature) to show the audience what true talent is. I am a strong girl but so afraid of the pole. Every club I go to I get the phone number of the best dancer, thinking I will hire her to come to my home and teach me how to use it. Yes, I have a pole in my living room, but I don’t know what the hell to do with it! I really must follow through and call one of them to teach me how to dance!

How do the customers vary in different locations?
Club to club can be so different. Everywhere I go there are die-hard fans that know more about me than I know about myself but the customers do vary alot from place to place. The real difference is with the clubs that are fully nude and don’t serve alcohol. These clubs draw a crowd that just wants to see me, the feature performer. However, they are much more mellow and not as verbal and it’s easy to feel, after the show, if they were into me or not.

How do YOU Find the dancers vary from city to city?
A dancer either has it or she doesn’t. I don’t care where she is from. It’s called sex appeal, either you are born with it or you’re not. Yes you can make a lot of money with or without it, but to be the best you need to ooze sex. Sex that seeps from your pores even if you’re just standing there doing nothing.

What sort of plans do you have for the future?
My future is so bright and exciting. I am bottling my own wine with a very talented winemaker from Italy. I have been studying wine for six years and I know what I like. I also know that the artistry of Roberto Cipresso, my wine maker, and his commitment to this joint venture will produce something really great. This is something I can carry on for years to come after I’m no longer in front of the camera.

What’S your Advice to girls about to start stripping?
The best advice I can give, which may very well fall on deaf ears is this-please stay away from drugs. It is not easy to do what you are about to do and drugs may make it that much easier, but not without consequences. Drugs make you do things you wouldn’t normally do, and then to feel better about yourself, you just do more drugs. Face the mirror and say to yourself that this is just a tool to support a better future. Remember, a fool and her money will soon part so save, save, save!

ANY Tips for girls already dancing?
I can’t stress it more. Yes it feels like easy money and I say that loosely because it is not easy taking your clothes off for a living but it is what we get used to. Take a step back and do the math. Yes it is easy to blow off work because the money is waiting for you tomorrow. Instead, go to work, put the money away. Tomorrow will give you an amazing future if you treat it as such. It is your future. Sorry, but age does happen and unfortunately most strippers do not save. Use your work as a tool. A tool to better yourself and build a future you can fall back on.

How do you get guys to maximize your tips?
Honestly I am not about the money. In fact, during one of my shows, I actually hand out hundred dollar bills. For me, it’s about getting my name out there and making the people who come to see me feel good. I would never want them to leave thinking, “I spent this much money, and for what???” Instead I want them to leave thinking, “Wow, she didn’t want my money, she just wanted to meet me.”

What Else have you learned over the years dancing on the circuit?
I am fairly new to the circuit. I love it. I love my ridiculous costumes and I love being on stage. I know the people just want to see me and they don’t care about the crazy costumes, but I feel I owe it to the club, who is paying me huge money, to put on a show that’s worth every dime. For me, i’s about costumes and performance. I have learned what men really want and how to adjust to any man’s personality. All women should learn this and their relationships would be much better.

I hope that readers will visit me at their local clubs and at my website: www.universityofsavanna.com

Tim Connelly of Adult Video News shares his insights

connelly.gifBY Rudy Montana

Tim Connelly has been in the adult entertainment business for over 30 years. He has been the publisher of Adult Video News for over two years, the adult industry’s most trusted trade publication. He has starred in over 100 adult films, viewed over 10,000 adult videos and is recognized as an expert on this $13 billion dollar industry that continues to grow. In this state of the industry interview he provides us with his seasoned observations and analysis.

connelly1.gifHOW HAS THE INDUSTRY CHANGED FROM THETIME YOU STARTED SOME THIRTY YEARS AGO TO NOW?

These are the big leaps as I see them:

Loops of 8mm and Super 8mm gave way to 35mm motion picture film.

35mm film gave way to videotape, bringing about the death of the theater and the advent of the home viewing experience.

Porno went from being a collective experience, that was born of “smokers” in the 1940’s, where guys got together smoking cigars and watching 8 mm films in someone’s basement or attic to motion picture theaters in carefully zoned and regulated areas.

This transformation brought about community standards laws which are now being questioned because one now buys adult material in a local store or through a web based retailer and views it in the privacy of their home.

Your next door neighbor need not know you enjoy that type of material at all.

Interestingly enough, at a point where the religious right is being paid back for putting W. Bush back in the White House by these draconian interpretations of obscenity vis-à-vis taking a new full frontal attack on the adult industry while deliberately obfuscating the public’s view of adult material by calling it obscene material.

This issues then becomes a question of:
1. A violation of 1st Amendment rights
2. A violation of community standards
3. A citizen’s right to privacy

Pornography is not illegal per say, obscene material is illegal.

The Bush White House blows that fine line by throwing in child pornography which amounts to less than 1% of total consumable product and that’s probably up from 1/3rd of 1% due to the proliferation of the internet. Never has any of that material been tied to the adult industry.

IS VIEWING TOO MUCH PORNOGRAPHY HARMFUL?
Never has repeated viewing of adult material been tied to an increase in sex crimes, violent crimes or rapes.

As someone who has watched over 10,000 adult films throughout my career, starred in over 100 of them, and done live sex shows for 2.5 years, I can guarantee that the only thing that will happen to an individual from watching too much pornography is that it will curb your desire to have sex. So if that’s the worst thing that can happen perhaps it’s a good idea that the local single bachelor guy in his thirties who can’t get a date because he’s socially inept gets to watch a movie with Jenna Jameson in it, making him feel better inside, learn some of the lines the guys use in the movie, and strike out on his own and actually meet somebody.

HOW FAST IS THE INDUSTRY GROWING AND HOW HARD IS THE GOVERNMENT TRYING TO STOP IT?
The Adult Entertainment Industry is growing exponentially. The American people are voting with their wallets and their feet by going into retailers selling sex related products and clicking on more internet sites than ever before despite a full frontal attack on the industry by the Department of Justice with as much fervor as when we first attacked Iraq with “shock and awe”.

At the same time, H. Louis (“Lee”) Sirkin, an attorney in Western Pennsylvania argued for Rob Black and Extreme Associates vs. USA, by taking a movie that people said was indefensible-an “X-rated” version of the Hillside Strangler Case-and successfully defended it in the most religious part of the “first found” state shortly after W. Bush was elected to a second term by the American people. Mr. Sirkin argued that this was a right to privacy case. The VHS tape [of Hillside Stranglers] was purchased on the internet, shipped at will to an adult and that the tape was unavailable at local VHS retailers and not viewable at a movie theater in that community. Consequently, he won the first round of that case. Of course the government has appealed, but they didn’t win out of the gate and we have significantly gained ground because more and more people want adult entertainment.

If people didn’t want adult material we wouldn’t have gone from 11,500 movies in 2004 to nearly 16,000 releases in 2005. And with the new DVD compression ratios we can now release a double disc set of 24 hours of programming for less than $10. This new price point is driving the market like never before. So while the Department of Justice believes it’s one guy on a Barcalounger who is a potential presidential assassin it’s obvious that common, everyday people are what we like to call customers.

WHAT DO YOU Think about THE .XXX INITIATIVE?
It’s a difficult issue. Given the new guidelines concerning #2257 record keeping regulation relative to the child protection/endangerment act its unclear in my view whether it’s going to ghettoize adult content producers or free us up to have our own arena. I always worry about being lumped into one category having been someone who’s been a left-wing radical at one time and a moderate conservative at another. The more I’m put into a box the less I’m a perfect fit for that scenario. The danger is you have to define what is .xxx and the problem is somebody has to make that decision. Generally the people who make those decisions have no uncertain bias. That would include someone who has a positive perception of what .xxx represents.

Being a parent, I personally want to keep this material away from my daughter who is now an adult and has no real interest in it. I protected her from it and advised her much the same way I would about putting a loaded handgun in her purse or having a cocktail when she was 9 years old. It’s material for adults. If you teach your children responsibility, ethics, integrity and decency, adult material will not offend them, enter their life or be a gateway to a life of debauchery and decadence. This type of upbringing will allow your child to freely choose as an adult. It’s incumbent on families and parents and the adult population at large to take personal and societal responsibility for protecting the innocent and underage from this sort of material, just as you wouldn’t leave a loaded gun and a fifth of whiskey where children hang out and play games.

Would you put AVN under .XXX?
No. We don’t even need a #2257 compliance form because we are not showing simulated sexual situations-all we have is limited nudity and we even try to avoid that because we are a trade based entertainment news site. You’re probably going to see more provocative imagery in a Maxim website than you would with AVN. Playboy is more salacious than AVN. We are like Variety, just with four letter words occasionally in the titles of the movies we review or discuss.

Does AVN have an international presence?
Yes, we absolutely do. There are over 10,000 people in North America that work in the adult industry and we get about 60,000 hits a day on our web-site from all around the world. Vivid Entertainment sells its cell phone content in Asia and it’s doing extraordinarily well. It’s a world market now!

in 2005, who are the top 5 adult entertainment companies?
I would say:

1. Vivid Entertainment
2. Wicked
3. Red Light District
4. LFP ( Larry Flynt Publications)
5. Adam & Eve

What about Digital Playground?
There are bigger volume companies, but Digital Playground is one of the best companies in terms of promotion and branding. It’s all about perception isn’t it?

Will the FCC mandate TO switch from NTSC to ATSC (hi-def tV) affect the ADULT industry?
Any form of communication will be spearheaded by adult content providers. As one of my seminar leaders said recently, “HDTV is probably better for watching professional football than sex”. I’ll adopt whatever format they come out with. If they can project a laser image and make it as crystalline as film stock I’d have one in my front room.

Do you feel U.S. Attorney General Gonzalez’s Pressure will affect the industry?
Yes. It impacts everyone, but it will not stop the demand. This is a business driven by demand. If there were tighter regulations on the importation of French fries because most of them come from Canada, I don’t think the American public would stop eating them if they raised the price on an order of fries by 10 cents. On a consumer level that might be the end result. If we have to shoulder a greater responsibility we will, but if people didn’t want it we’d be selling shoes. People want this material more than ever. Alberto Gonzalez isn’t going to stop it. George W. Bush isn’t going to stop it. None of the “red states” are going to stop it. In fact, at AVN we don’t call them “red states” they’re just customers!

Any advice for people that want to work in the business?
1. Watch a reality, vanity show.
2. Go to the gym, work-out and get a tan.
3. If you’re a guy have a big talent, come in with a girl.
4. If you’re a girl, you need to be beautiful and more importantly you need to portray sexual truth that doesn’t lie.
5. Make a movie at home. If it works for you on tape, you’ve made a step. If you throw a great curveball the scouts will find you!

Q&A Diablo Cody

diablo_image.gif
Raised in the privileged Chicago environs, Diablo Cody is the undisputed favorite ex-stripper of her newly adopted home of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis / St.Paul). Her true-life tales of pleasuring herself for cash during an event at Sex World garnered local acclaim on Blogging Night and the author of Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper is soon to be a produced screenwriter penning a fictional tale entitled “Juno”. She writes for a local Minnesota rag and recently keynoted the annual 2006 Gentlemen’s Club Expo in Las Vegas. We discussed the trials and tribulations of the sex industry and growing up and knowing you’re different.
AET: Where did you go to college?
DC: University of Iowa where I majored in Media Studies and Russian.
AET: What direction did your life take that led you to explore the world of sex and pornography?
DC: My life was taking an incredibly predictable direction. I grew up sort of upper class and from a sheltered family. My life was pretty normal up to that point. I graduated from college and I was working as a secretary in Chicago. I was a typist type character in a very unfulfilling job. I thought to myself that I’m 23 years old and I needed to do something electrifying, interesting and provocative before it’s too late. The most unpredictable thing I thought I could do was stripping and I wound up really enjoying it.
AET: What do you think of women who take up this stripper profession? Do you think they lack self esteem?
DC: I think a lot of them lack self esteem which is discouraging, but you also meet women that have the right attitude. I think you need to go in there with a lot of self-confidence and a bit of chutzpah and savor the experience and make it as positive as you can for yourself. I made
sure that when I was stripping that I never got bogged down in melancholy or too dramatic because it is a dark profession and you have to keep an optimistic outlook.
AET: If you had to distill your book “Candy Girl” on a stripper’s life down to a short statement what would it be?
DC: The interesting thing about my book is that it does not have a lesson. It doesn’t curtail a lot of moral soap boxing. The book is more an adventure like a travelogue. It’s just the story of somebody who did something unexpected and decided to write about it from the trenches. It’s an observational book and I think it brings curious people in and enables them to see a side of life that they normally would not be exposed to.
AET: Do you think sex should be sold as a commodity like milk or beer?
DC: When you put it that way it sounds so callous, but yes. I do take a libertarian viewpoint on that matter. I am flummoxed as to why the government does not allow people to barter with sex like they would with dollars or goods. I think that it’s great that Nevada allows sex workers. I wish it was a country-wide thing.
AET: Tell us about things you observed in the clubs that are unfair financially to strippers?
DC: I have a major problem with the so-called independent contractor system. Young girls come to a club who are not very well-informed on contract law and you’re telling them that they are independent contractors but at the same time you’re setting up all these rules as to when they can come and go and how often they can work. You also
have the girls paying the clubs hundreds of dollars per night for the privilege of working. I understand the “pay to play system” or maybe renting a spot in the club-that’s how hairdressers ply their trade. To me it was so frustrating because not only did the club owners have a stranglehold on me but they were completely draining the income that I
had earned honestly at the same time making rules when I supposedly was an independent contractor. It would not work in any other business. The club owners in the sex industry are brilliant because they know they are working by and large with ignorant young women they can exploit financially.
Some places make you pay $150 per night to work which might not be much for an “A” girl but for a “B” girl like
me who is working with a smaller customer base $150 is a lot. I also think it unfair when you have clubs that charge per lap dance. For every lap dance you did you had to give up a percentage which actually amounts to penalizing you for succeeding.
AET: Why do you think you were chosen to be the keynote speaker at the 2006 Gentlemen’s Club Expo?
DC: The theme of this year’s expo was to focus on education and evolution and they saw me as a fresh figure on the scene because I’m not the usual suspect in terms of the qualities people imagine in a sex worker and they knew I was saying some thought-provoking things about the industry. I would love to see sex evolve so it was more inclusive-so that it wasn’t relegated to being an under-the-table shady kind of
enterprise. I do not understand why sex can not be a more mainstream part of society.
AET: How do you see pornography affecting society?
DC: Pornography seems to be a polarizing issue especially between men and women. I would like to see people in the sex industry using pornography to unite people rather than dividing them. My husband and I bond over porn that we enjoy and going to strip clubs. I wish more people could appreciate it for what it is and not see it as a threat
or some kind of deviant activity.
AET: Any new books or projects?
DC: I’m working on a second book about my experiences in Hollywood because
I work as a screenwriter now. I have a two script deal over at Warner Brothers that I’ve been working on for a year or so. I have a screenplay that’s going into production in early 2007 called “Juno”. I wrote another script for WB that’s in the can and they’re commencing me on a new one so that when all’s said and done it will be three scripts. That’s been an incredibly surreal and exciting experience and I hope in 5 years I’m still working in the movie industry because I enjoy it.
AET: What is your screenplay “Juno” all about?
DC: It’s about a teenage girl who gets pregnant by accident and is placed in a position where she has to choose between the adoptive parents for her unborn baby. She winds up forming an unusual alliance with the adoptive father. It is a kind of dark comedy.
AET: Where did the story for “Juno” come from?
DC: I just came up with it. {Laughs} I pulled it out of my brain. We have a great director attached to the property named Jason Reitman who
directed “Thank You for Smoking”. I’m really excited about this project. I’ve been invited to the set, but I’m going to keep my mouth shut as I’m such a novice. I’ll leave the filmmaking to the pros.

Angelina Spencer said, “The adult
entertainment industry is usually the first             industry that theocratic conservatives and their politicians bash when they want to shift public focus away from real issues such as taxes and the economy and find an easy route to get their name closer to the front page of a newspaper.

The SEA is composed of legitimate business people that give hundreds of women an option above minimum wage and they generate millions of dollars per year back into the local economy. ACE National’s research has indicated that states hosting civically involved adult entertainment also boast the best tourism and convention business.”

So Adult’s Can’t Dance Like The Kids Do?

Many localities, even Sin City Las Vegas, ban adults infyi-page-3_long_left.gif a licensed sexually oriented business from lap dances. And yet, across the nation kids do booty dancing (also called freaking, the grind, da butt, doggy dancing, front piggy-backing, dirty dancing, the nasty, backing it up, the wax — as in someone bending over to wax the floor) at middle and high school dances, including for homecoming, winter formals and proms and at all ages nightclubs (under 18 years of age).

Since the 1980s, females have been dancing with their backs to their partners, bending forward and pressing and grinding their butts against the male’s crotch. As I was quoted in The Los Angeles Times: “Every generation finds its successors’ dances to be improprieties. What is the difference between frontal body rubbing and one person rubbing a backside against a front side? It’s all sexy. Dancing is sexy. But so what? It’s not sex. It’s flirtation.”

SCORES NY STRIKES OUT WITH CHARITIES

fyi-page-3_santa_girl.gifHoward Stern’s favorite strip clubs, Scores New York, have been given the
icy cold shoulder by nearly all the
Xmas Charities serving the New
York area.  Over 200 silicone
endowed providers wanted to
donate their hard earned pussy
cash to charities such as the
Coalition for the Homeless, but were
put out in the cold.

Only the Marine Corps League’s Toys for Tots Program accepted the stripper’s generous donations. Elda Auerbach who handles PR for the New York clubs was
quoted as saying: “I’ve never been so embarrassed in my entire life. It’s a real shame”.

In addition, Scores New York, offered to send some of their hottest girls to Iraq and Afghanistan to cheer up the troops in harms way only to be shot down once again by another group of hypocrite bureaucrats.
