Raised in the privileged Chicago environs and educated at the University of Iowa, Diablo Cody is the undisputed favorite ex-stripper of her newly adopted home of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St.Paul). Her true-life tales of pleasuring herself for cash during an event at Sex World garnered local acclaim on Blogging Night and the author of Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper is soon to be a produced screenwriter penning a fictional tale entitled “Juno”. She writes for a local Minnesota rag and recently keynoted the annual 2006 Gentlemen’s Club Expo in Las Vegas. I caught up with her at home and we discussed the trials and tribulations of the sex industry and growing up and knowing you’re different.Q: Is Cody Diablo your birth name or a Nome de Plume?D: Nome de Plume. I’m a firm believer that everybody should get to choose their name when they become an adult and this is the one I chose for myself.
Q: Why?
D: I’m really a sort of defense-less person so I wanted something that sounded sort of tough.
Q: Where did you go to college?
D: University of Iowa where I majored in Media Studies and Russian.
Q: What direction did your life take that led you to explore the world of sex and pornography?
D: My life was taking an incredibly predictable direction. I grew up sort of upper class and from a sheltered family. My life was pretty normal up to that point. I graduated from college and I was working as a secretary in Chicago. I was a typist type character in a very unfulfilling job. I thought to myself that I’m 23 years old and I needed to do something electrifying, interesting and provocative before it’s too late. The most unpredictable thing I thought I could do was stripping and I wound up really enjoying it.
Q: What do you think of women who take up this stripper profession? Do you think they lack self esteem?
D: I think a lot of them lack self esteem which is discouraging, but you also meet women that have the right attitude. I think you need to go in there with a lot of self-confidence and a bit of chutzpah and savor the experience and make it as positive as you can for yourself. I made sure that when I was stripping that I never got bogged down in melancholy or too dramatic because it is a dark profession and you have to keep an optimistic outlook.
Q: If you had to distill your book “Candy Girl” on a stripper’s life down to a short statement what would it be?
D: The interesting thing about my book is that it does not have a lesson. It doesn’t curtail a lot of moral soap boxing. The book is more an adventure like a travelogue. It’s just the story of somebody who did something unexpected and decided to write about it from the trenches. It’s an observational book and I think it brings curious people in and enables them to see a side of life that they normally would not be exposed to.
Q: Would you call it “gonzo journalism”?
D: I have heard people use that term to describe it, but I am loathe to use that term because I do love the late Hunter Thompson so much that I would never want to imply that I was anywhere near him. But, yes, in a way it is!
Q: Do you think you are an independent thinker?
D: Absolutely! I never felt as if I fit in any way. I am a really masculine women-that’s a weird way to describe myself. By this I mean that I’m not super-emotional and tend to have a free-spirited approach to life and kind of bounce along.
Q: Can you provide us your take on the sex industry?
D: It’s an exploitive industry! Absolutely! I’ve never denied that. I just feel that there are times in life when you can appreciate being exploited. That’s one of the amazing things about being a women, especially a young woman is that it’s the one time in your life when you can find yourself being objectified, worshipped and ogled. I enjoyed all of that. I don’t think people should have to feel degraded because they’re being objectified.
Q: Do you think sex should be sold as a commodity like milk or beer?
D: When you put it that way it sounds so callous, but yes. I do take a libertarian viewpoint on that matter. I am flummoxed as to why the government does not allow people to barter with sex like they would with dollars or goods.
Q: I’m in Nevada just for that reason.
D: I think that it’s great that Nevada allows sex workers. I wish it was a country-wide thing.
Q: Do you think it’s an extension of the Puritanical roots of America?
D: Oh God! Absolutely! In fact, I don’t know how this is possible but I think this country is getting worse because of the current W. Bush Administration.
Q: Tell us about things you observed in the clubs that are unfair financially to strippers?
D: I have a major problem with the so-called independent contractor system. Young girls come to a club who are not very well-informed on contract law and you’re telling them that they are independent contractors but at the same time you’re setting up all these rules as to when they can come and go and how often they can work. You also have the girls paying the clubs hundreds of dollars per night for the privilege of working. I understand the “pay to play system” or maybe renting a spot in the club-that’s how hairdressers ply their trade. To me it was so frustrating because not only did the club owners have a stranglehold on me but they were completely draining the income that I had earned honestly at the same time making rules when I supposedly was an independent contractor. It would not work in any other business. The club owners in the sex industry are brilliant because they know they are working by and large with ignorant young women they can exploit financially. Some places make you pay $150 per night to work which might not be much for an “A” girl but for a “B” girl like me who is working with a smaller customer base $150 is a lot. I also think it unfair when you have clubs that charge per lap dance. For every lap dance you did you had to give up a percentage which actually amounts to penalizing you for succeeding.
Q: How do they know how many dances you give?
D: They generally would have a DJ watching girls in the lap dance area and keeping tabs of every lap dance they had done. The system was corrupt as well because the DJ’s could be bought. The DJ acting as a spy for the club is a very insidious thing.
Q: I’ve heard prettier girls are treated differently. Is that a fact?
D: The prettier girls are told to arrive latter and remember they don’t have to be objective. You can’t plead discrimination. If they {the club owners} don’t think you’re hot as far as their concerned you’re not. They just use their eyes.
Q: I believe that’s called casting with your dick?
D: Exactly. At the time I was working in the industry I was also engaged and didn’t possess the “classic Barbie look” that tends to sell and I wasn’t fucking club owners or DJs so it was very difficult for me to get any kind of privileges. I’m not whining about it at all. I can not stand when girls feel sorry for themselves. You’ve got to do the best you can with what you’ve got.
Q: Did you think about becoming a Call Girl? Professional Escort?
D: I did think about it. I think I would have done best catering to fetishists, but I didn’t wind up doing it. It is illegal in my state of Minnesota and I think it would be difficult to do safely.
Q: Why Minnesota?
D: I met my husband on the internet and I moved here so I could live with him. That was about four years ago {2002} He’s a director at an advertising agency.
Q: According to your book you’ve worked in advertising haven’t you?
D: Yes, I was a secretary and a manager at an ad agency. Hated it. I can not handle a desk job. I just don’t have it in me. I was a very atrocious employee.
Q: Why do you think you were chosen to be the keynote speaker at the 2006 Gentlemen’s Club Expo?
D: The theme of this year’s expo was to focus on education and evolution and they saw me as a fresh figure on the scene because I’m not the usual suspect in terms of the qualities people imagine in a sex worker and they knew I was saying some thought-provoking things about the industry. I would love to see sex evolve so it was more inclusive-so that it wasn’t relegated to being an under-the-table shady kind of enterprise. I do not understand why sex can not be a more mainstream part of society.
Q: Do you think the United States government should regulate pornography?
D: I don’t understand why the government should have anything to do with pornographic material of sexual relations between consenting adults. Pedophilia, however, is another story. I don’t want anything to do with it.
Q: How do you see pornography affecting society?
D: Pornography seems to be a polarizing issue especially between men and women. I would like to see people in the sex industry using pornography to unite people rather than dividing them. My husband and I bond over porn that we enjoy and going to strip clubs. I wish more people could appreciate it for what it is and not see it as a threat or some kind of deviant activity.
Q: Name your favorite porn mag?
D: My favorite magazine is Hustler’s Taboo. I like all that bondage stuff. Being a woman I love amateur but I gravitate to the high budget productions like Vivid and Wicked. I like it all.
Q: Do you travel?
D: I go to L.A. pretty frequently.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Any new books or projects?
D: I’m working on a second book about my experiences in Hollywood because I work as a screenwriter now. I have a two script deal over at Warner Brothers that I’ve been working on for a year or so. I have a screenplay that’s going into production in early 2007 called “Juno”. I wrote another script for WB that’s in the can and they’re commencing me on a new one so that when all’s said and done it will be three scripts. That’s been an incredibly surreal and exciting experience and I hope in 5 years I’m still working in the movie industry because I enjoy it.
Q: What is your screenplay “Juno” all about?
D: It’s about a teenage girl who gets pregnant by accident and is placed in a position where she has to choose between the adoptive parents for her unborn baby. She winds up forming an unusual alliance with the adoptive father. It is a kind of dark comedy.
Q: Where did the story for “Juno” come from?
D: I just came up with it. {Laughs} I pulled it out of my brain. We have a great director attached to the property named Jason Reitman who directed “Thank You for Smoking”. I’m really excited about this project. I’ve been invited to the set, but I’m going to keep my mouth shut as I’m such a novice. I’ll leave the filmmaking to the pros.

Jennifer Allison has put together another screenplay worthy of her unique talents. She weaves women’s issues about men with friendship and self esteem. The tools that she has to work with may be porn, but her skill is unmistakable as she works us into a story about four young women dating in the LA scene.
Melanie (Lindsey Meadows), Jennifer (Kayla Paige), and Charlie (Kelly Wells) are girlfriends a little too 
interested in each others lives and the circle around which Kirsten Price orbits. The feature begins with the group grousing over what is the definition of happiness. Melanie is the first to gripe over her boyfriend breaking up with her, and with a quick cut over we have her boyfriend (Marcus London) fucking another woman (Anita Blue) with Anita taking a gorgeous mouth pop as the money shot. It is Melanie relating her catching him at this point to her girlfriends. Her issue: was that she was younger.
Kirsten Price is a magazine writer working on a story for Girltalk magazine. She and her friends live in the same house, going over their personal misfortunes with men.
