The authors treat the reader to the words of Marilyn Chambers, Traci Lords and Nina Hartley, as well as the travails of the Mitchell brothers and Reuben Sturman. The interview subjects come not only from porn; law enforcement is represented as well. The FBI agents and police officers who waged obscenity campaigns against the industry ensure that the story is even-handed throughout. It is exciting to see how both sides view the battle, with different perspectives on the same events presented on the same page.
While the public waits for a definitive history of the porn business, The Other Hollywood fills the void sufficiently. For anybody interested in learning about how the business began and evolved, this is the first book to read. Unbiased and thorough, it is the best account of the industry’s inner workings to date.
