Sexumentary to Hit Stores on Tuesday, May 6th
Jimi Hendrix, the iconic rock ‘n roll guitarist, will be seen in a new role – as an adult film star – in “Jimi Hendrix The Sex Tape” to be released online at www.hendrixsextape.com today, Tuesday, April 29th by Vivid Entertainment, the world’s leading adult film studio. It will be available in stores across the country a week later on Tuesday, May 6th.
Vivid obtained the footage from a collector of rock ‘n roll memorabilia. It was shot about 40 years ago in a hotel room as Hendrix had an erotic liaison with two slender brunettes. The future of the porn industry is uncertain. Anecdotal evidence suggests a 30 percent drop in video revenue in 2007. Cable TV/Pay-per-View (CTV/PPV) and internet likely stuck to 2006 growth rates at best. The business is running out of bets to place. The answer, though, may lie in mobile technologies.
According to Adult Content in the Palm of Your Hand, a report by Juniper Research, mobile may be the next wave of technology to rescue the suffering porn business. Juniper estimates that the global market will grow from US$1.7 billion in 2007 to above US$4.6 billion by 2012. Most of the market today is in Western Europe, which has a 45 percent share, though it is likely to reach US$1.5 billion by 2012, according to Juniper. North America has only US$25 million now, but could reach US$575 million in five years, representing market share growth from 1 percent to 12 percent. Eastern Europe and Latin America are also likely to see substantial market growth over the coming five years.
Some industry insiders agree with Juniper’s assessment. When asked what the next wave of innovation for the industry to ride would be, Digital Playground founder and CEO Joone answered one word, “Mobile,” without hesitation. Understanding the rates of mobile technology in Western Europe and the ubiquity of text messaging in the United States, it is not hard to grasp the source of his enthusiasm. Further, enhanced mobile network and feature-rich devices make the technology more viable as a platform for adult content delivery.
Porn’s need for a new market is palpable. Internet content distribution appears to have reached maturity, and CTV/PPV could be the next victim of internet-driven revenue cannibalization. Though CTV/PPV revenue grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39 percent form 1998 to 2006, according to data from AVN Internal Research and Forrester Research, the sector posted gains of only 19 percent in 2006 (the last year for which AVN Internal Research developed estimates).
Mobile could fill the vacuum left by the iPod’s unrealized potential. After several experiments in 2005 and 2006, content producers have backed away from Apple’s popular technology. As a closed system, Joone explains, it is easy for Apple to construct barriers to the dissemination of specific content. A substantial opportunity was made unattainable, and the industry was left to find alternatives. The advent of mobile porn seems to be the next battleground for an industry that quickly adopts and saturates new media venues.
Juniper’s research suggests that the industry will change substantially over the next 5 years, but the implication is that porn will at least have a future. In its current state, the industry is unable to become self-sustaining. While mobile technologies provide another outside stimulus (like the VCR and internet), at least the industry will buy time to sort out its inherent inefficiencies.
