The world of erotica novel publishing can get pretty steamy, and not even because of the writing. Between the Lines by Sara Schwersenska shows what can happen when agents and recruiters in adult publishing companies start taking their work home. Especially after a kid gets brain cancer and their father sells the family business to spend more time with him.
It’s heart-warming for most novels. As erotica goes, in the words of a much wiser man than myself, not so much.
The story follows Sterling Morris, an erotica author on the cusp of stardom. One of his biggest fans, Alexandra Tate, is the head of a large publishing company. Morris is under contract with a rival publisher. He’s aggressively recruited by Tate to come work for her, Morris none the wiser that Tate’s not just looking to make money.
Chaos ensues.
Between the Lines ends on a thud. Schwersenska does a decent job of setting up the tension between the two main characters, but ultimately what does them in seems a bit mundane. Not that erotica needs to read like Dostoyevsky, but something more was expected. Schwersenska, while showing some good talent for setting up sex scenes, did a less than stellar job of making them, well, sexy. Cliché’s abound, even by erotica standards. The passion in the writing itself was there but it seemed not to translate well to the page.
Between the Lines could have benefited from a real good re-editing. There’s a decent sex novella in there somewhere, but not in its current form, sadly.
